Question about my Hyacinth plant?

I received a Hyacinth as a gift. It looked pretty for about 10 months. Now it is turning brown on top. It%26#039;s been a water only plant all this time. Can I transplant it into dirt? If not, how can I find a water type container that will keep the bulb from getting submerged?

Question about my Hyacinth plant?
Yes, you can plant it in dirt. And/or any gardening shop should carry bulb vases. They are very commonly available.

It may be turning brown if you haven%26#039;t fertilized it. There are water soluable fertilizers available for aquatic gardening.
Reply:Hyacinths are Spring/Summer plants so it just might be dying off for the Winter.

You can plant it outside and it will come back next growing season.

HUSBAND 28: likes cars, motorcycles, tools - but has most of them, NIECE 17: likes the color purple, doesn%26#039;t wear jewelry, loves cd%26#039;s but has tons already, NEPHEW 10: regular boy, into playstation - but again has tons, MOM 65: doesn%26#039;t like knicknacks, has most everything already, DAD 67: doesn%26#039;t like for us to buy him gifts, but we feel guilty not too. He used to fish and hunt but is now sick. He plants tons of veggies. THANKS A TON FOR YOUR HELP!

Need ideas for Christmas gifts for one or all listed. Any suggestions?
if it were me and this were my family, the niece would get either a nice purple top and a gift card to a music store or a gift card to one of her favorite clothing stores or one for the mall. The nephew would get a gift card to the local game stop. My parents don%26#039;t like us to buy for them either but I always do. I would put together a gardening gift for you dad. A new trowel, packages of seeds, new gloves, one of those knee pad things. Mom, I would get something for the house that wasn%26#039;t a knick knack. Framed pics of her grandkids, A new set of wine glasses. I%26#039;m not sure about the husband. My man is way into computers and i know nothing about them so I let him pick his gifts. Good luck.

My wife refuses to buy Christmas gifts for my family members.?

I am not a shopper and never know what to buy people. But my wife says that she will not buy a single gift for any member of my family this year because they have basically treated her terrible all year. If she paints a wall yellow, someone in my family says it would look better green, when she planted flowers in the spring, the complained about her choice of flowers. When my wife got a dog, they complained because it was from the pound %26amp; not a purebred. My wife looked at my sister one day and said %26quot;screw you%26quot; and she went home (leaving me stranded at my sister%26#039;s house to find another way home). I understand my wife%26#039;s feelings but want her to put her anger aside for Christmas. She says no way, when they can be nice to her, she%26#039;ll buy gifts but not until. Is she being fair?

My wife refuses to buy Christmas gifts for my family members.?
yes, if my mans family treated me horrible it would be a cold day in h*** before I spent a dime on them. If you wanna buy them gifts go ahead but put yourself in her shoes. Would you want to be nice to someone who has treated you the way they have treated her
Reply:Fair? I would say your family hasn%26#039;t been fair to her at all.....

accord. to your story, they have treated her like crap. And she has every right to feel the way she does....until you go to your family and defend her and tell them you expect them to treat her with respect as your wife, she doesn%26#039;t owe them the time of day, really. And as far as going shopping for them...Nada, wouldn%26#039;t happen if it was me, you can bet on it.

I hope they (your family) finds a way to mend their rude behaviour. Otherwise, you will be attending family functions either alone or with a wife that has no intention on taking any crap..... and good for her.
Reply:Don%26#039;t get you wife anything, for Christmas, until she stops whining.
Reply:I agree whole heartedly with your wife.......and if you were a good husband you would be sticking up for her!
Reply:Yes, she is. Why on earth would she want to buy gifts for someone who treats her like that? I wouldn%26#039;t. If you want to buy gifts for people who treat your wife like that, go for it ... but, don%26#039;t%26#039; expect your wife to welcome them with open arms Christmas day.
Reply:Guess you need to learn to shop...She doesn%26#039;t have to buy anyone anything...
Reply:She married YOU not the entire clan okay? If she refuses to give them anything this year for all those reasons, I don%26#039;t understand why you allow your family to treat your wife so badly! If I were her, I%26#039;d stop talking to any of them for good! And since you side with your family, wow! No wonder she%26#039;s pissed.
Reply:There%26#039;s only one way out of this - buy presents for them yourself and sign all the cards with just your name. Heck, a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates will do for the adults, and a book token for any of the kids they have.

I get where you%26#039;re coming from about the %26quot;spirit of Christmas%26quot; - but, unless these things are resolved beforehand, it%26#039;s hypocritical for your wife to buy gifts.

By the way - where are you in all of this? Aren%26#039;t you taking a stand and telling your relatives that you won%26#039;t have your wife treated like this? Seems they know they can get away with putting her down - and, where I come from, that%26#039;s called bullying.

BTW, I%26#039;ve just read your additional details, and your wife is completely right. Your family seem to have no respect for others, and I%26#039;m not surprised she wants little to do with them. Honestly, there are some boundaries which are being completely trampled on here. These incidents are out of order.
Reply:You please go ahead buy some gifts for your family, hand over the same in the name of your wife. Also buy some gifts for your wife, handover the same in the name of your sister. But please ensure that what you buy for your sister is not a dog.
Reply:ok, your wife is completely in the right here. and you are trying to find a way to convince her shes wrong. you need to step up to the plate, and put your wife first, where she belongs. if you want YOUR family to have gifts, then get off your butt and go buy them! i am in the same boat as her, and i have refused to have anything to do with a single one of the self righteous bastards in his family! take up for her, not them!
Reply:I concur with Clo!

Unreal......I love Christmas as well and laid the same law down with my husband last year....and his family has now figured a few things out. Good for her! Think how you would feel if her family treated you this way!

Peace.
Reply:The gift of giving comes from the heart. If the wife feels the families unfairness and not wanting to buy gifts for the family this year, ask her, how%26#039;s she gonna feel when everyone in the family have brought gifts for her, and they%26#039;ve gonna receive none? Gonna feel pretty shelfish! Tell the wife to go shopping and show her worth of being a better person then everyone makes her out to be, the family are just testing her.

Ask the family to support her more, than to be judged and critisied. Maybe they%26#039;ll really get to appreciate her as you do!

Hope you both enjoy your xmas!
Reply:I think you need to back up a second here. IT%26#039;S your family. Stick up for the woman you love, Stop letting your family walk on her like a doormat. OMG, I have seen this in my everyday life. I have a cousin who is married to man, whos family treats her the same way and he does nothing!I think fairness went out the door a long time ago. If you love her and want to get her something for Christmas. Be the man she fell in love with and take up for her. If you stop letting them treat her like a dog, they will back off and maybe then you will see a happier, more loving woman who would want to be around your family. Good luck!
Reply:Don%26#039;t force her to buy anything or else things are gonna get really ugly for you guys. Relationships get really complicated when family sticks their nose in everything. No offense, but your family sounds really picky maybe you need to tell them that it hurt her feelings and side with your wife. But your wife also seems stubborn and gets angry really easily over not-so-big issues. I feel sorry for ya buddy :)
Reply:your wife is just still afraid of rejection.the gifts that she may buy may again be criticized.for once,be the one to buy your family members the gifts this christmas and put your both names on the card.then casually tell your family members,%26quot;my wife chose these%26quot; if they say something nice then be quiet.if they say otherwise, then eventually tell them you%26#039;re the one who bought those.talk to your family members also, maybe they%26#039;re too hard on your wife. =)
Reply:I want to tell your wife that %26quot;she is doing the right thing%26quot; !!!!

I want to tell you, to put on an %26quot;apron%26quot;, start cooking and buying the presents for your %26quot;selfish%26quot; family !!!!

What kind of plant/flower is this? (pictures included)?

Hi,

Does anyone know what kind of plant this is?

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9306/ds... (side view)

http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/5788/... (top view)

Someone gave it to us as a gift. Apparently it can flower if you know how to take care of it, but since we%26#039;ve had it, it hasn%26#039;t shown any flowers. It seems like it%26#039;s struggling to stay alive.

Please see the pictures I%26#039;ve posted above.

Thank you for any information.

What kind of plant/flower is this? (pictures included)?
That is definitely a bromeliad. It appears to have bloomed recently but is now almost completely faded.

The family Bromeliaceae, commonly called Bromeliads, is

one of the larger plant families horticulturally and certainly one of the most diversified. This diversity applies to some very unusual plant forms, colors and markings that exist among its fifty or so genera and over two thousand recognized species. Bromeliads can vary in size from midgets less than 1 inch wide to giants over 35 feet high. They have scales on their leaves which are remarkable moisture absorbing organs that pull water right out of the air.

Geographically, bromeliads are found in the United States from Virginia to Florida across the southern states through Louisiana and Texas then down through Mexico, Central America and the West Indies and finally into South America all the way to central Argentina and Chile. The largest concentrations are found in Mexico, the Antilles, Costa Rica, eastern and southern Brazil, the Andes of Columbia, Peru and Chile.

They are remarkably tolerant and adaptable plants. They can be found along seashores where the salt sprays, and into the extreme heat and drought of the coastal deserts. Some grow in the filtered, broken light of the rain forest and others high in the tree tops where there is a great deal of light and air movement. They are found growing at sea level to as high as 16,000 feet. Some are terrestrial and others are saxicolous, growing on rocks, but most of them grow in trees, epiphytically.

Bromeliads are very adaptable but they, like most plants, must adjust when moved to new surroundings. Extra care should be given a plant during this adjustment period to provide its critical environmental needs. In many cases this means extra water or misting of the plant. It could be a need for extra air movement or cooler temperatures. Most of the bromeliad genera adjust very easily to our environment. . ll.

It would not be possible or even desirable for us to try and duplicate all of the ecosystems where bromeliads are found to be growing in their natural habitats. Most bromeliads will adapt to our environment and in many cases our growing experiences will enable us to improve the growing conditions over their native habitat. Bromeliads are not difficult to grow and most will respond very well in less than ideal conditions. They are survivors and most of them will withstand much more abuse and neglect than many plants from other plant families.

Inorganic materials such as perlite, polystyrene or styrofoam beads, hadite, coarse granite (turkey grit) or river gravel aid in maintaining the porosity of the mix as the organic materials decay. Some of the organic materials used to provide good drainage : crushed pine bark, shredded tree fern, redwood wool, redwood bark, fine and/or medium fir bark, and cork. Coarse sand, potting soil, long fiber sphagnum moss, osmunda fiber and peat (Canadian or German) are materials which have water holding ability. Peat also furnishes acidity and bromeliads like a neutral to acid medium.

Instructions for watering in every given condition is difficult to give. Much depends upon the type of potting mixture, humidity, light, temperature and air circulation of your growing environment. You must also consider the plants moisture requirements and whether you are growing indoors or outdoors. Generally, plants that are equipped with a cup should not be allowed to become empty. This is not critical but when it happens the plant has absorbed all of the water and any salts or residual fertilizer that may have been in it will become concentrated in the cup and could damage the center of the plant and/or burn the leaf edges near the base of the plant. Rain water is certainly best when it is available. Those who grow outdoors during the summer will reduce the watering requirements and will provide the ideal humidity for most bromeliads. If you use city water and it contains excessive salts, flushing of the plant periodically will reduce the chances of salt damage. If you are growing indoors you need to mist the plant about twice a week in addition to your watering in order to prevent drying of the leaves by the low humidity.

Light is extremely important in growing bromeliads to their maximal beauty. We have learned a lot about the light requirements of the various genera by studying their native habitats and from our own growing experiences. The beauty of most of the genera will be enhanced by giving them even more light than they would have received in nature. Most of the brightly colored foliage plants require some strong light to maintain their brilliance. Few will take our direct noon day sun during the hot summer. Most of them will take early morning and late afternoon sun but should have some filter from trees, shelter or shadecloth during the heat of the day.

Most bromeliads grew as epiphytes in their original habitat. They were accustomed to good air movement and have commonly been referred to as air plants. Even though they will thrive for a while in a confined area indoors their best potential will only be reached where they can have an abundance of fresh moving air.
Reply:i believe its a bromliad too
Reply:It%26#039;s Bromeliad family, yes, but more narrowly, it%26#039;s Guzmania (genus). The flower stalk looks dead, though :-) See the picture below.

Bromeliaceae includes Guzmania, Pinapples, etc.
Reply:I believe, at a glance, that it is a bromeliad. The red one is a popular house plant and looks like this: http://mongabay.com/images/20050831/0207... when it is in bloom.

it might be struggling because it needs a bigger pot... try transplanting it in good soil in a larger pot...

How do I plant a rose?

A regular rose that came as a gift died but instead of drying, new offspring are coming from the leaves! how do I plant them?

How do I plant a rose?
I%26#039;m a little confused. Are you talking about a cut rose? Are buds opening or are you getting new growth from a rose plant? If it is a cut rose then you can%26#039;t plant it. However, if you have a bush just plant it in the ground. Many people get mini roses as gifts and are completely unaware that these are rose bushes intended to be planted outside so if this is what you are talking about then I would do my best to keep it alive over winter and then plant it in the ground in full sun after all danger of spring freeze is over. However, if you live in zone 9 or higher then you can go ahead and put it in the ground.

Planting instructions:

1) prepare the new home by digging a hole 2ftx2ft and water the hole. Fill the hole with water and let it drain at least twice.

2) save the top 2/3 of soil that you just dug up and set aside. Discard the bottom 1/3.

3) amend the soil you saved with peat, bone meal, and garden compost.

4) in the bottom of the hole add a layer of manure 2-3 inches thick and then layers some of the amended soil on top of the manure. Do NOT set the roots directly on the manure.

5) Remove the rose from it%26#039;s container and check and trim off any dead or damaged roots. Also, make sure your rose is not root bound loosening the soil and unbind the roots.

6) set the rose in hole making sure the soil on the root ball is a little above the level of the new hole. You want the rose to be on a small mound.

7) fill in the hole half way with the ammended soil and water. Once the water has run through then finish filling in the hole with the soil and water throughly.

Good Luck
Reply:you cant plant a rose... you have to plant a rose bush
Reply:Well first you take a mini shovel, then you make a hole.Next you take the seeds and you put them in the hole.(make sure you put the hole in the sun.)Then you cover up the seeds/cover the hole.after you do that pour some water on the hole(make sure you don%26#039;t over fill with water. The right amount is when you see that the top of the dirt were you planted the seed.)the last thing make sure you pull the weeds around it and don%26#039;t forget to give it enough water and plenty of sunshine.)You%26#039;ll do fine.

Can you plant tulips in an indoor pot?

i%26#039;m trying to think of inexpensive holiday gifts (low on funds this year) and i had an idea to give my family potted tulip bulbs for christmas. i thought it would be neat for them to keep and wait for the bulb to grow. but can you do this indoors? i%26#039;ve only heard of planting tulips in the garden. will they grow if the soil isn%26#039;t frozen?

forgive my lack of knowledge on this... i am not a gardener!

Can you plant tulips in an indoor pot?
It is a little late to force them into bloom in time for Christmas, as they need 6-8 weeks of cold temps before they start to grow. You can get bulbs, and put them in pretty pots, in soil, and put them in your own fridge until Christmas, and give them with instructions to chill them for another month, then take them out and start them as a pretty surprise for spring. The only thing about chilling them in the fridge, is not to put any fruit in there with them, as ripening fruit puts off an ethane gas that will kill flower buds in your bulbs.

Or you can go to a garden center and get pots of amaryllis and narcissus, already planted and ready to grow with a little water. Sometimes they also have hyacinths and tulips ready to go. It isn%26#039;t any more expensive to get them ready-potted than it is to do it yourself and buy the components seperately.
Reply:*****Excellent idea!****

I%26#039;d buy a bag of potting soil for the project though.

They make some excellent mixes that have fertilizer in them already and it%26#039;s not too expensive.

********Yes you can, *******

it%26#039;s called forcing. The one thing that must be done before is

to put them in the refrigerator first. That makes them think they have gone thru a dormant spell.

Infact there are many types of bulbs you can do that with. Paper White Narcissus is a beautiful one.

Link below will tell you how to.

Reply:Everyone starts somewhere!

Actually, there are very few plants that can%26#039;t be grown in pots, if the pot is large enough. A pot of tulips sounds like a wonderful idea!

I%26#039;m not sure the tulips will have time to actually do much growing between now and Christmas. But you should be able to find instructions for taking care of the bulbs, either with the bulbs or via a Google search.
Reply:You can give them pots of tulips, but you want to be sure they are pre-chilled. If they aren%26#039;t, they will not bloom. The chilling period that tulips get outside induces bud developement inside the bulb. If the bulbs are not pre-chilled, then they have to be put in the refrigerator in their pots to chill for 12 weeks. Then take them out and put in a warm sunny spot and watch them grow.
Reply:Time is going to be a problem here. Most bulbs require several weeks of cold before they will bloom. And the other poster is correct as there are a few that require less then others. But yes, you have an excellent gift idea there.

Purdue University published a guide for doing exactly what you are talking about. Check out the link below.
Reply:Paper white daffodils or amaryllis are best and you can buy little kits at a home store. They come in a little box and you can wrap it too.

It%26#039;s easy to force bulbs like tulips and hyacinths (smell good). Just put them in the fridge for at least a month and plant. They take about a month to grow though. You could try without refrigerating them. It%26#039;s always a little trial and error.
Reply:Tulips need 6 or more weeks of cold to bloom. You can put them in the fridge for this. Better for Christmas would be narcissus or amaryllis which are available at this time of year just for this purpose. They are ready to plant and will bloom in a short amount of time. Some come already in soil and a pot. I have seen them at Target and Lowes.
